This One's For You

The plan was simple. I would pack up a box of graham crackers, a bag of marshmallows and a bar of Hershey's chocolate and send it to Miss Pickering, along with a recipe for smores. I knew she and the Hound would think they were awful (ly good).

Then the temperatures dropped in England and she started talking about rain and jumpers, (sweaters to us on this side of the pond) and I started to worry, was it too cold, did she or didn't she have a grill, or whatever they call it in England. I dropped the whole idea.

But tonight GG wandered off in search of dessert and created a brilliant new smore. She toasted the marshmallow per usual BUT then she sandwiched it between 2 chocolate McVities digestives ("Tasty wheat cookies, half coated in chocolate").

An American classic updated for the lady and the hound. A little black dress with a brooch from Chanel, a pair of jeans with an Hermes scarf, a ball gown and wellies. German girl, putting the chic back in camping.

  1. I've yet to meet a British girl not partial to a digestive or four!

  6. Yes we have grills and bbq's. I don't personally because it is against the law for a girl to work such a device in the UK.

But i do know a man who does.

They look just the thing for a summers evening.

If we ever get another one, i will recreate this gastronomic delight.

p.s. i have sent you an English cream tea. Scones, clotted cream, homemade jam, and loose tea.

Do Americans tea of the non iced variety?
    Do you have a pot?
    and a strainer?

  7. Be aware there is the question of cataclysmic importance, clotted cream then jam on top or the other way around. Personally? Cream first, instead of butter, then the jam. I believe Cornwall and Devon practically went to war over this. Miss P would know for sure.

  8. P.S. BBQs really are a male thing in the UK. Usually involving cremation of lovingly marinaded meat, low grade food poisoning and lashing rain. Or maybe that's just ours. We have given up, although we have a chiminea which is perfect for melting marshmallows, our kids do that a lot in the summer and Guy Fawkes night. I do harbour longings for an outdoor bread oven.

  9. Miss P., I am sitting upright, perfectly postured awaiting my tea.

I do have a pot and a strainer and an kettle to heat the water.

I as ever have an appetite. Feed me.

Belinda, I would try it both ways and report on the favorite. Our troops just left Iraq today, I hope not to start another war.

I've got to get over there with GG and Marie from 66squarefeet and teach you girls how to cook with fire!

  10. You, GG, Marie, Miss P, and me cooking with fire - are you kidding, it would be an amazing, eyebrow imperiling HOOT of a party. I want it now. Miss P might provide tea and twee in the most English of style, (if she would be so very kind), and I will be at the ready with notepad and pencil to take notes from American fire-sisters (with fire extinguisher tucked under arm). Doesn't it sound fine?? Will Miss P wear slutty heels?

  11. Forgive me, american, german, south african fire-sisters.

  12. Belinda, A def yes on Miss P.'s shoes.

    Well done on the nationalities.

And no fear if your fire sisters are there. We can handle a match of two!

  13. Well, I was going to ask if you remember marshmallows from years ago when they were hard on the outside and you could [carefully] toast them all the way around and leave the soft center. But then you all packed up and went to England to set fire to something or other. Did you take the Earl Grey?

  14. I will wear slutty shoes, i don't own any that aren't. Apart from Uggs and wellington boots, but probably not suitable for the climate.

I am a jam on first person, putting jam on top of cream just seems messy don't you think?

It has rained here for 2 days, really hard rain. The sort you wouldn't want to leave your car windows open in.....
